It is merely for the wind up so it starts to falter, nevertheless the smack-right up finale rescues they on the ‘red’. Admirably staged and you may wisely dialogued, it’ll have no high difficulties inside living down its extremely unattractive name.» [ 8 ]
Monthly Movie Bulletin said «The movie actions during the a fast rate, the fresh talk is actually slick and characterisations generally active. Richard Brody throughout the The brand new Yorker listed «It terse and you may taut motion picture noir are predicated on the brand new personal and you may elite conflicts of one’s term character, brand new criminal genius (starred by Cock Powell) at the rear of a chic unlawful gambling enterprise. The fresh new film’s copywriter and you can movie director, Robert Rossen, sets up an effective multidimensional chess video game, to have mortal stakes, ranging from Johnny, their boss (Thomas Gomez), their boss’s spouse (Ellen Drew), an excellent cagey cops inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and a scuffling celebrity (Evelyn Keyes) whoever sister (Nina Foch) has worked from the gambling enterprise and you may old a good corrupt detective (Jim Bannon). The caustically epigrammatic software, the newest cast’s suavely managed gestures out of like and menace, and you can Rossen’s thrillingly controlled and you may fashionably cocky pictures (and additionally their governmental conscience) get this to pugnacious yet in depth spectacle a low profile classic of your own genre.» [ ten ]

Photograph possess motion and you will anticipation, and you may certain quick joins off humor to provide taste. Adept shows by Penis Powell, once the a betting home overseer, and Lee J. Cobb, as an authorities inspector, as well as within the rating . Although the patch employs a familiar trend, the fresh new characterizations is actually new as well as the activities sufficient to help you overbalance. Dialogue is terse and you will topical, preventing the emotional, phoney touching. Uncommon cam basics come-along occasionally so you can escalate appeal and you can temporarily stop the interest. Good teamplay by Robert Rossen, doubling due to the fact manager-scripter, and you may Milton Holmes, totally new journalist and you can representative manufacturer, also helps with rendering it a softer manufacturing.» [ 11 ]

It is mostly a question of viewing Mr. Powell read his paces fashionably when you are a large shed off actors and you may performers bring him vintage support. Evelyn Keyes takes on the great little lady which brings about the latest finest in him and you will Ellen Drew is the smooth and you will slinky vixen whom becomes him on the jams. Thomas Gomez was greasy because villain and you may Lee J. Cobb does a unique ready concert tour as a tired police inspector whom fundamentally closes the truth. A great amount of sipping and you can puffing is done of the all of the alarmed.» [ twelve ]
